Main info about The Southern Chronicles (Pietinia Kronikas), Lithuanian comedy
Original Name
Pietinia Kronikas
Description
In the early 1990s, in a working-class neighbourhood of Šiauliai, Lithuania, rebellious 17-year-old Rimants spends his days playing rugby, listening to Eurobeat, and hustling on the black market like everyone around him at that time. He is looking for a better life for himself. His best friend Minde shares the same belief that strength and money are the keys to success in this tough, fast-changing world. But when Rimants meets Monika, a cultured middle-class girl, he discovers a new universe of books, music, and ideas that challenge everything he knows. A humorous, nostalgic, and vibrant coming-of-age story capturing the spirit, slang, and energy of 1990s Šiauliai, showing the awkwardness and struggles of a teenager growing up.

About the director — Ignas Miškinis, filmmaker behind The Southern Chronicles (Pietinia Kronikas)
About Director

Ignas Miškinis
Born in 1978 in Vilnius, Ignas Miškinis is one of the brightest representatives of the young generation of Lithuanian filmmakers.
A graduate of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (MA in Film and TV Directing, 2003), he made an impressive debut with the short “Easily and Sweetly” – a film that travelled the world from Rotterdam FF to Melbourne FF and sparked renewed attention to Lithuanian cinema.
His first feature, “Diringas” (2006), a bold low-budget drama, stirred both controversy and acclaim at home. Miškinis’ follow-up, the urban road movie “Low Lights” (2009), was co-produced with Germany and became a critical success, premiering at the Karlovy Vary IFF (East of the West competition) and winning Lithuania’s top national film award – the Silver Crane for Best Film of 2009. It went on to screen at over a dozen international festivals including Warsaw, Hamburg, Busan, Seville, Leeds, Brussels, and Cottbus.
His feature, “Kings’ Shift” (2016), continued his festival streak with screenings in Montreal, Braunschweig, Goa, and Duhok, among others.
Between films, Miškinis became one of Lithuania’s most sought-after commercial directors, recognised for his sharp visual style and precise storytelling.
