The Lithuanian Film Centre, the Lithuanian Filmmakers Union and a national selection committee have picked local smash hit “The Southern Chronicles” (“Pietinia Kronikas”), by Ignas Miškinis as Lithuania’s official candidate for the 98th Academy Awards in the best international feature film category.
Based on a best-selling novel by Rimantas Kmita, the film follows 17 year-old Rimantas as he grows up in the turbulent post-Soviet Lithuania in the 1990s. While more interested in rugby, music, and street life, his encounter with Monika, who comes from a more middle-class background, opens his eyes to literature, culture, and a different way of seeing the world.
"A film bursting with vitality, raw energy and an undeniable sense of hope"
The Chair of Lithuania’s national committee, film critic Neringa Kažukauskaitė said “The Southern Chronicles” scored the submission for being “a film bursting with vitality, raw energy and an undeniable sense of hope. The coming-of-age drama, carried by a breakout cast of young local actors, radiates authenticity.
Their performances light up the screen, leaving a lasting impression on audiences. At its core, the film is an unflinching portrait of identity in the making, a story deeply rooted in regional history yet urgently relevant today.
In a fraught geopolitical moment, the film’s visibility and cultural reach take on added weight, shining a spotlight not just on a story, but on a nation.
Lithuania’s highest-grossing movie of all time
Produced by Inscript’s Lukas Trimonis, co-producer of the multi-awarded Latvian film “Oleg,” the pic has captured the local zeitgeist and turned into Lithuania’s highest-grossing movie of all time, with more than 411,000 tickets sold in nine months, in a country of 2.9 million inhabitants.
Miškinis’s first film in eight years has also been hailed by critics and achieved a near clean-sweep at this year’s national Silver Crane awards, with 12 wins out of 14 nominations, including film, director, actor (Džiugas Grinys), and screenplay (Eglė Vertelytė).
On the festival front, the pic won best Baltic film at last year’s Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. International sales are handled by Baltic Crime.
