Kaspar Viilup: “The best film of last year made from Tallifornia, this is Meel Palile’s second feature film Rolling Papers, which manages gracefully and essentially to capture what it means to be young in 21st-century Estonia. The Wes Anderson–like aesthetic that characterized his first film Tree of Eternal Love has been set aside; Paliale draws more from American indie and so-called stoner comedies, but succeeds in making these motifs work effectively in the local context. In its own way, the film even attains anthropological value, as it documents both Tallinn’s urban space and the places where young people mostly hang out these days. It’s possible that this is the best domestic youth film we’ve ever had. The characters are vivid and real, and the actors clearly believe in what they are portraying. What touches the most is the love story between the two main characters — above all, a homely, seemingly trivial quarrel, within which all the strengths and weaknesses of a relationship are contained.”
